When TESO was pulled from Australian shelves in February, there were fears that the game may not make it onto PS4 and Xbox One until the tail end of 2015. These concerns were unfounded though as the game was only removed as TESO transitioned from a monthly subscription model to a ‘pay once, play forever’ model instead. Alongside the announcement that The Elder Scrolls Online was ditching the subscription fee, publisher Bethesda also announced that the game would be coming to PS4 and Xbox One in June and so finally, console fans could rest easy.

Console users were also delighted when it was announced that The Elder Scrolls Online would be getting a console beta. As TESO on PC had been criticized for things such as frustrating quests, any chances to test out the game before buying were welcomed with open arms. Unfortunately, as The Elder Scrolls Online is such a big game, some console players won’t be able to play it.

On the official Elder Scrolls blog, Bethesda explained:

This day one patch has been rolled out alongside the 39GB game client for the beta and so those looking to play the TESO beta (which Bethesda also says is the full game experience and not a pared down trial) will have to download the entire 54GB package before they begin playing.

This poses a serious headache for fans as it means that those with weaker Internet connections may miss the beta window entirely (it ends on April 27th, 10AM EDT) as the game will not have downloaded in time for them to play it. The beta is already a closed one (Bethesda sent out emails with codes earlier this week) and the large download file may limit players’ ability to get online and play and in turn, this could limit Bethesda’s ability to adequately test the game ahead of its release.

In addition to download speeds, there are also concerns that many players will not have room for the game on their consoles. The PS4 and the Xbox One both come with 500GB of hard drive space (although it’s closer to 450GB due to system software), but between game installs that push the 50GB limit, the free games that Sony and Microsoft dole out every month and game patches on top of that, for some that 500GB of space has already become inadequate.

Do you think Bethesda should release The Elder Scrolls Online on two discs? Have you run out of space on your current gen console? Leave a comment.

The Elder Scrolls Online is now available on PC and Mac. The game will be released on PS4 and Xbox One on June 9, 2015.
