The date is known as The Last of Us Day, an annual event that celebrates the critically acclaimed series because it’s the day that the game’s Cordyceps outbreak reached critical mass.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new trailer.

‘The Last of Us’ Trailer Reveals Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie

The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel Miller and Ellie Williams, the main characters that gamers would have played in the zombie survival game.

Naughty Dog’s game, and by virtue the HBO show, is set in the U.S., following the outbreak of a parasitic fungal brain infection caused by exposure to Cordyceps fungi, which has all but devastated mankind.

Joel is one survivor of the outbreak who works as a smuggler across America, and he is embittered following personal losses during the initial disaster. During his journey he encounters 14-year-old Ellie, who he is asked to look after by his friend, Marlene.

Together, they travel across the U.S. in a bid to reach the base of a militia group known as the Fireflies, of which Marlene is the leader.

Other cast members include Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy, Nick Offerman as fellow survivor Bill, and Merle Dandridge as Marlene.

The Fireflies resist government control and the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA), which is in charge of various quarantine zones across the U.S.

Melanie Lynskey is also taking on a role in the HBO adaptation, and she is set to portray a new character known as Kathleen.

The trailer showed all of the actors in character, while also teasing the drama surrounding the initial outbreak and the way in which the infection impacts people.

In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, viewers are shown a glimpse of a clicker, an infected human in the third stage of the disease that has spread throughout their body and whose face is completely disformed by the fungal infection.

Joel and Ellie will have to do all that they can to survive the treacherous journey across America, fighting for their lives each and every day against the hundreds of infected humans vying to kill them.

Teasing the importance of their journey, one character is heard saying: “This is our chance, our best shot, you keep her alive and set everything right. Save who you can save.”

The Last of Us premieres in 2023 on HBO and HBO Max.
