The Breath of the Wild sequel made quite the splash during the presentation for that reason, especially since this marks the first time we’ve seen footage in some time. During the reveal trailer, the first we’ve seen of the game under its newly-revealed moniker, we got a brief glimpse of what to expect from the follow-up, even if it came in the form of a painfully short video.
There wasn’t much footage to go by in terms of seeing what’s next for Link, unfortunately. But the new trailer was just enough to whet appetites and get viewers hyped once more for what’s to come. The trailer does show Link scaling a giant beanstalk to see the kingdom of Hyrule from up high. As for reaching the ground? He’s got what appears to be a stingray glider that’s a massive improvement to the original awarded during the first game’s opening.
The trailer ends far too soon after that, but not without revealing a key bit of information that everyone’s been waiting for: the release date. When can you finally get your hands on the Breath of the Wild follow-up? It’s a lot sooner than you might have guessed— we’re not years out from the game, but months.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release Date
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is set to debut on Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023. That means there’s less than a year remaining until we can see what happens in the follow-up to the first Switch entry in the Zelda franchise, Breath of the Wild.
Typically, Nintendo has decided to create one-off Zelda entries instead of continuing each story with a sequel. In this instance, we’re getting what appears to be a direct continuation of the story previously established in the last game. Unfortunately, there are scant details on what that means for Link and Zelda as well as the kingdom of Hyrule going forward—but judging by the title, it’s probably a lot of heartbreak.
There’s still a decent amount of time to wait, but that means there’s just plenty of reason to go back and play previous entries in the Zelda series. And room for theory-crafting as usual, so we can all put our brains together and work to determine what this game’s storyline could entail.
So if you haven’t finished the first game and want to experience the story from the beginning, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available as a Nintendo Switch exclusive now.
