The Outer Worlds developer Obsidian Entertainment is teaming up with publisher Private Division and the port experts at Virtuos for the upcoming Nintendo Switch version of the game.

“Whether you choose to zap foes with your shrink ray or charm them with smooth-talking abilities, The Outer Worlds lets you play the way you want and be the galactic hero (or villain) of your dreams. And on the Nintendo Switch, now you’ll be able to take The Outer Worlds anywhere you go,” a press release announcing the port said, emphasizing the console’s portability aspects.

The Nintendo Switch version of The Outer Worlds will cost $59.99 and will only be available digitally. A boxed version of the game released to stores will contain a digital version of the game, for download in the Nintendo eShop.

The coming port of The Outer Worlds for Nintendo Switch was revealed in November, 2019, with publisher Private Division anticipating a release date in the first quarter of the year—a goal met by the coming March 6 release.

Obsidian Entertainment previously created Fallout: New Vegas, which remains a favorite among fans of the series, thanks to its wide-ranging choices, role-playing options and use of factions. The Outer Worlds is a spiritual successor of sorts to New Vegas, with an emphasis on player choice and consequence.

The deep interactions possible between the expansive cast of The Outer Worlds required an astounding amount of writing, with a 600,000 word script for in-game spoken dialogue—comparable in length to Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Since it’s original release in October, the game has garnered praise for its irreverent sense of humor.

“Most of the humor comes from people in an absurd situation and how they view the world because of it,” Co-Game Director Leonard Boyarsky told Newsweek in October. “The player, as an outsider, comes in and deals with the absurdity, so the jokes all come from a place that’s built from the narrative up and not trying to find silly things just to toss in everywhere.”

Set on planets in an alien galaxy, The Outer Worlds includes pulpy sci-fi creations like a shrink ray and a collection of space-faring and robotic companions that join you on your adventures.

The game’s original release was critically acclaimed, with an 86 MetaScore. Assuming Virtuos pulls off the port, The Outer Worlds is likely to be an exciting release for Nintendo Switch owners who didn’t have a chance to check out the game when it first hit store shelves in 2019.
